World Wine Atlas Turns 42 With Finest Edition to Date

In 1971, The World Atlas of Wine made its debut.  Now, 42 years later, it has been published, not only as the most honored compendium of the wine world in history, the new edition covers the full global wine scene

with words and graphics that set a new publishing standard on the subject.  Authors Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson have co-researched and written this encyclopedia since 2004.  Johnson, 63, began this task in 1971.

His Pocketbook of Wine  while Robinson, 53, author of Wine Grapes (2012) and Oxford Companion to Wine, writes on the daily internet site jancisrobinson.comwith subscribers in no less than 100 nations.  No journalist in the annals of the fermentation of the grape has earned as many international honors as this pair…who received their diplomas from rival institutions of learning (Johnson, Cambridge-Robinson, Oxford). Johnson is a regular contributor to the London Times, Robinson composes a bi-monthly column for London’s Financial Times.  She is an advisor to Queen Elizabeth II on her majesty’s wine cellar.

Johnson has earned publishing honors in the field of biology, authoring the International Book of Trees in 1973 and his 2011 Trees: A Lifetime’s Journey was acclaimed as the reference book of the year (or, we presume, of any other annual time measure).  Neither author writes as a stuffy academic.  Their respective efforts at prose are accessible and enjoyable.  Both have proven adept at writing broadcast scripts.

The last edition of the Wine Atlas was in 2007.  Changes in climate, in winemaking techniques and in were wine grapes are grown, are all reflected in this publication.  Major worldwide wine trends are covered, such as moves to vinifying less familiar local varieties and styling wines that are lighter, fresher than predecessors.

We applaud this edition’s emphasis on location and the topographical conditions that dictate any region’s wines.

Color coded, infinitely detailed maps enable the reader to have cartographic knowledge of regions all over our globe.  Here you will find details behind the sudden rise of China as a grape grower and wine producer.  Details abound on such hitherto unpublished words and graphics on dynamic wine regions such as coastal Croatia, Khaketi in Georgia (the place where Stalin was born and raised), New Zealand’s Canterbury, South Africa’s Swaziland, America’s northern Virginia and China’s Ningxia are among the inclusions.
